This is a moon snail. We promise they’re cool and cute.
Moon Snail Kids started because the kids (art) was simply not alright. In early 2024, while prepping for their son Walker’s summer debut, James and Julia went to work curating the perfect art wall with the perfect blue accent wall for the perfect nursery (we see you, first-time parents). They wanted art that was fun, modern, and didn’t scream “generic baby shower.” So they did what any very pregnant graphic designer and her very supportive partner would do—made their own.
Julia, a seasoned graphic designer with a soft spot for bright colors and all the animals, saw a golden opportunity: nursery and kids’ art that was modern, expressive, and didn't offend the grown-up taste buds. She and James put their heads together, made some truly awful puns and riffed on dad jokes, debated the merits of a newt versus a narwhal, and several spreadsheets later—Moon Snail Kids was born.
The name? Inspired by Julia’s daily waddle down to Bainbridge Island’s Manitou Beach, nine months pregnant and accompanied by their family dog, Leela. There in the tide flats, they’d often find moon snails nestled in the sand—giant, squishy, mysterious blobs of delight and wonder. Fun and a little weird. Kind of like us…
Today, we’re a small but mighty team in Seattle: Julia makes the art, James keeps the lights on (and the spreadsheets formatted), and Walker and Leela are just happy to be here. Thanks for being here—we’re glad you found us.
